WINE TRADITION

Peloponnese is the largest wine making area of Greece accounting for 22,000 hectares of vineyards. Ancient monuments, mountains and monasteries, environmentally protected areas and indigenous grape varieties - the Peloponnese is the ideal wine lover’s destination.

The vineyards are dotted around, well integrated into the diverse and interesting countryside. The vineyards of the Peloponnese are concentrated mainly on hilly and mountainous areas, either in complex terrain, or plains and valleys between the mountains. The most important areas are Nemea -famous for its reds- and Mantinia –renowned for its whites. Other wine regions include Achaia, Ilia, Messinia and Laconia.

Peloponnese has a mild Mediterranean climate, which is formed by the favorable effect of the sea breeze of the Gulf of Corinth and, the cold air provided by mountain ranges of Central Greece and central Peloponnese.

The main local varieties are the reds Agiorgitiko and Mavrodaphne and the white Moschofilero, while over the last decades a lot of vineyards have been planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a few other international varieties.

It is produced by blending the indigenous Greek Agiorgitiko, with the international Cabernet Sauvignon.

Agiorgitiko, also called “blood of Hercules” for its color is the most widely planted red local vine variety in Greece. The grape has traditionally been grown in the Nemea region of the Peloponnese but can be found throughout the country. The red wine produced from Agiorgitiko has good fruitiness and coloring. Agiorgitiko is generally planted in dry, infertile soil to encourage the production of fewer but more concentrated grapes, ripening after mid-September.

Cabernet Sauvignon adds to the wine tannins, thus, aging potential. It rounds the body in the mouth and offers structure.

It is a blend from Moschofilero and Chardonnay.

Anyone in pursuit of a Greek white grape variety which promises refreshment and enlivenment, all the while offering exoticism unprecedented in a Mediterranean country, should look no further than Moschofilero. It is an aromatic grape of Greek origins with a pink/purple skin and quite spicy flavor with good acidity. Grown throughout much of Greece and primarily in Peloponnese where it is traditionally used to make a dry and bold wine. It is characterized by its «rose garden» bouquet and makes still, sparkling, and dessert wines, with characteristics similar to the Muscat.

Chardonnay on the other hand, is green-skinned. The variety originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France, but is now grown wherever wine is produced and is the most popular white variety on earth.  The Chardonnay grape is highly influenced by the terroir it grows. In cool climates it tends to give medium to light body with noticeable acidity. In warmer locations (such as the Peloponnese), the flavors become more citrus, peach, and melon, while in very warm locations  more fig and tropical fruit notes such as banana and mango come out.

It is a blend from the local Agiorgitiko and the international Merlot grapes.

Agiorgitiko, is considered to be one of the noblest Greek varieties. It gives wines with deep color, fruity aromatic character, high-ranking in alcohol degrees, with a rich structure in the mouth, tannins and acidities. The variety's versatility has led to it spreading across Greece and to other warm growing regions, but the best wine made from this grape is in the higher-altitude vineyards of Nemea, in the Peloponnese. It produces rose wines of excellent rose color and fine, full body.

Merlot grapes add color and red fruit notes. Soft and smooth by character, Merlot is ideal for rose wine blends.
